Veteran Samajwadi Party (SP) leader and former Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Mulayam Singh Yadav passed away at his native village Kakor in Uttar Pradesh's Auraiya district at around 9 pm on Saturday. He was 92.

The veteran leader had been fighting illness for several days. His last rites were performed on Sunday in Uttar Pradesh’s Auraiya district. A huge crowd gathered during the final rites to catch a last glimpse of the leader.

Describing his death as an irreparable loss to the party, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav said he was a simple man who did not even bother to get a house constructed in Auraiya town and stayed at his village home. “He was an example of how a political leader can live a simple life among his people who vote for him,” Akhilesh said in his condolence message.
