Cabinet approves changes in POCSO Act, includes death penalty for sexual offences against children
The Union Cabinet approved amendments in POCSO ( Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act on Wednesday, which deals with crime against children. According to the information, now POSCO act included death penalty for sexual assault on minors. Post amendments, Act also provide for fines and imprisonment to curb child pornography. The government aims at discouraging the trend of child sexual abuse by implementing strong penal provisions incorporated in the Act. Earlier, the Centre had brought these amendments but it did not get approval from the Parliament. It is seen as another attempt by the Modi government after the cabinet approved the changes.
What is POSCO Act ?
The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act 2012 is established to protect children below the age of 18 years from sexual abuse, sexual harassment and pornography in India.
